This morning I woke up from a terrible dream in a bit of a panick.  I was getting married….and I had on a big, poofy, white princess-type dress on :(

No more Say Yes To The Dress for me.

Today I gave a speech on pirating music for my public speaking class (I think just by posting this chart you can assume which side of the debate I am on) and in my speech I broke down how much revenue off of a new CD costing $15.99, goes to the artist, the record label, etc.  I understand that a lot of people have argued that pirating music is harmful to the artist’s themselves by directly taking away profit from them.  What I’ve found during the research for my speech, was that illegal downloading of music has actually helped to promote musicians and caused a greater amount of profit to go to the artist, rather than the rest of the industry.

I refuse.

veganrican:

I refuse to be made feel bad because I don’t want to water down my ethics and values for your convenience.

The problem is yours. Not mine.

And what’s important is not that the world start believing bigger is better — but that bigger is acceptable. That bigger is okay, just as thin is okay. And furthermore, just as you wouldn’t say “skinny people are gross,” you wouldn’t say “fat people are gross.” Because what’s gross is judging someone by their appearance; what’s gross is teaching people to hate themselves.

Full Frontal Feminism - Wedding Fever

Recently, a friend of mine lent me this book, Full Frontal Feminism by Jessica Valentini.  It’s all about modern feminism and it’s generally aimed at younger women in their teens and twenties.  The following excerpt from the book sums up many of my thoughts and feelings towards our society’s views on marriage/weddings today:

“The whole wedding insanity started bothering me when I first watched A Wedding Story on The Learning Channel a couple of years back.  It’s a cute show: It shows the bride and groom describing how they met, how the proposal went, and how crazy in love with each other they are. Aw. But the majority of the show is about the planning of the wedding itself.  It’s not called A Marriage Story, after all.  But shouldn’t getting married be about, well, the marriage rather than the party?  Not that wanting to have a nice wedding is a bad-or new-thing. But the cash aspect has changed significantly in recent years, and the focus on consumerism versus romance is kind of disturbing.”

This is probably a good thing

There is a direct correlation between the amounting time I spend in class and doing homework and the less time I spend caring about my appearance.

Minimalism vs. The Corporation

“What part of our lives isn’t controlled by corporations? A tiny portion, one that’s shrinking rapidly. Minimalism is a way to shake free of those shackles, slowly. It’s a way of saying, “I don’t need to buy more, to work more in order to get more of your products and services. In fact, I can be happy, content, joyful, creative without spending a single dime. All I need is the sun and the trees and the water and a good friend.” Minimalism is finding ways to live that aren’t controlled by the corporations.”

Dead on. This is how I feel. We need to be reminded that we’re stronger than corporate industry. The space we create is crucial.

I flirt with minimalism time and time again, I think it’s about time I devote my energies towards it.
